Mariposa Sota knows all too well the pain of dreams deferred. Whether dealing with the disappointment of being abandoned by her daughter's father, working tirelessly at a dead-end job only to lose it, or watching helplessly as those she loves the most fall victim to the same streets they are all trying to escape, one thing is clear to Mariposa: Whenever she puts her all into something heartbreak is sure to follow. For Caesar Simpson life had always been lived behind the eightball. The firstborn child to an absentee father and drug-addicted mother, Caesar is the only real parent his younger siblings knew. With the love of his homies and an unbridled love for 'the life' Caesar maintained despite hardship. After a five year prison term he's back in Denver and is intent on living right. When Caesar runs into Mariposa, the beautiful woman that had somehow blossomed from the silly little girl that use to follow him around neighborhood, he knew he had found the only good thing that life would ever show him. Problem is, she is his best homies little cousin which makes her off-limits. Despite his efforts, Caesar can't help loving her. For Mariposa the return of her first crush, a man she has loved all her life, makes her more vulnerable than ever. They say hearts never lie, but people do. Will heartbreak, pain and death keep them apart or will their feelings for one another rise above all else?

Q&A with Patricia Pickett, Author of "Hearts Never Lie"

Q:  When did you decide you wanted to write?

A:  I have always keep journals and wrote poems but as I got older and started running the streets making bad choices with my life I had completely stopped writing. Then in the fall of 2000 after I almost lost my life I began writing poetry as a vehicle for my many emotions that I was dealing with about death and Cancer.

Q:  How many novels in all have you written?

A:  I have written and published one book of poetry entitled Green Eyes Open, I also wrote Hearts Never Lie and I am almost finished with my sophomore novel tentatively entitled Love Won’t Let Me wait.

Q: How long did it take you to write your first novel?

A:  Sometimes Hearts Never Lie would receive two days of non-stop creativity other times it would sit collecting dust for weeks. I would say all in all I wrote it in about six months.

Q:   Where do you get your inspiration for your stories? Are the characters based on real people?

A:  Hearts never lie’s characters were mainly all fictitious Abuelo did have some of my Grandfather’s traits though. But most of my stories are developed by people watching or daydreaming like sitting around and all of a sudden going what if? That’s where my story lines come to life.

Q:   After writing your first novel, did you self-publish? If so, how was that experience?

A:  I self published my book of poetry through Iuniverse it taught me a little about how publishing works so it wasn’t a bad experience.

Q:   What feedback have you received from fans?

A:  I’ve been receiving a lot of love from everyone who has read my book and I have heard more then a few people tell me they cried while reading Mariposa’s and Caesar’s story. I’ve also been told that my writing was sort of poetic too, which meant a lot to me.

Q:  What authors do you admire? Did one of them inspire you?

A:  My list of authors who have inspired me is so long I’d hate to pick just one, but they know who they are because I have told them how very much I appreciated them for sharing their advice and gems with me.

Q:   Is writing your only passion?

A:  It’s my strongest passion, but I love cooking, dancing, and eating. lol

Q:   Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A:  With God’s blessing I see myself with at least four novels under my belt and a large group of readers waiting for the next story to drop.

Q:   What advice would you give aspiring authors?

A:  Don’t give up. If you love it, then love it for the love of it not for anything else.

Q:   What would you like readers to learn from your stories?

A:  Hope. When I first began writing I wanted to show that no matter what choices you make ultimately there is always a price and if you choose to change for the better the rewards can be better. I want to write an entertaining story that once the reader is finished they sit back wishing there is more.

Q:   Are you working on another novel? If so, What is it about?

A:  Love Won’t Let Me Wait is a story about a man and woman who’s love interest with one another through out the years has tended to always have some sort of bad timing. While Reese struggles to fight a death sentence Jelani also has a fight because he in turn is fighting a life sentence. It’s a story about faith and blessings.

Q:   Where can people purchase your books? Do you have a website?
